Spieth stumps rules officials on Saturday

Can Jordan Spieth wet the bottom of his putter during competition?

Spieth said that when greens get shiny, his putter tends to slip when he grounds it. When he practices, he wets the bottom of the putter with a towel or by using his fingers.

“I’ve spoken to commentators, players, and nobody knew the answer,” he said. “I didn’t know if it was legal, so I’ve never done it (during a tournament round), so I asked an official once I knew the course was like that (on Saturday).”

Spieth asked an official on the third hole at Trump National Doral, and the official asked what Spieth’s intentions were. Spieth said it made it easier for him to set his putter down.

Spieth waited for an answer. Five holes later, he got one - sort of.

“It was a split on the decision,” Spieth said. “So they called the USGA and he said that the USGA was going to talk about it further, but for now we’re going to rule that you cannot do it.”

Spieth was told he could use a towel to clean his club and if it’s wet that is not a violation, but the official advised him not to wet his finger and apply it to the bottom of the putter.
