Johnson Returns to Winning Ways

Johnson overturned a five shot deficit in the final round at the WGC-Cadillac Championship

Dustin Johnson overcame compatriots J B Holmes and Bubba Watson to win the WGC-Cadillac Championship and record his first victory since taking a six-month break from the sport.

American Johnson overturned a five shot deficit in the final round by carding a closing 69 to finish nine under par at Trump National Doral: one shot ahead of overnight leader Holmes, who struggled to a 75.

Holmes had seen his five shot lead turn into a two shot deficit in the space of seven holes due to three early bogeys and four birdies from double Masters Tournament champion Bubba Watson.

But as Watson faded with three bogeys on the back nine to eventually finish third, it was Johnson who took advantage with birdies on the eighth, tenth and 15th to move into a lead he would not relinquish.

“It means everything,” Johnson said. “It’s been a tough road but a really good one. A lot of really great things came out of it, my son, me and Paulina (his wife) are doing great....it just feels awesome to get that ‘W’. I played great today.

“I knew I was really good. I just knew there was something that I was missing that could make myself great. I have really been working hard on that and I think it’s working right now.

“I’m so excited right now I can hardly talk. It feels great and it’s definitely by far the best one (victory).

“After a long layoff, to come back out and win in my fifth start means a lot. I’ve been working hard on my game and been working hard on me, and so it means a great deal to have some success right out of the gate. It gives me a lot of confidence, too.

“This being my first win as a dad, definitely, is the most special. Paulina and Tatum were waiting for me when I got done - that was the best part of the day for sure.

“It’s hard to describe, but just from the first day he’s born, your perspective on life completely changes. Things that were important aren’t important anymore; he’s the only thing that’s really important, and being there for him and being a role model for him.

“It makes life a lot easier I think, because there’s just one thing that’s all you think about. It definitely simplifies stuff.”
